A Meriwether County jury has found Clint Womble of Warm Springs,
Ga., not guilty of shooting Gary White in the yard of a Warm Springs residence on Oct. 12, 1996.
“Our theory of the case all along was that this guy was killed in a drug transaction that had gone
bad,” defense attorney Frank Martin of Columbus said Wednesday about the verdict, which was reached
last week.
Martin noted that Melvin Gates, a state witness who has been convicted on drug charges, testified he
discussed with the owner of the house where the shooting occurred whether White was an informant or
undercover agent.
“We took the position one of them killed him and tried to blame it on my client, who said he wasn’t
present and didn’t know anything about it,” said Martin.
Martin called no witnesses in the three-day trial, and the defendant was not asked to testify.
