Jury clears local man in shooting

A 36-year-old Columbus man was found innocent Thursday in the June 9 shooting death of a man he caught breaking into a car at his business.

A Muscogee County Superior Court jury deliberated about 20 minutes before acquitting Darrell Williams on a voluntary manslaughter charge, District Attorney Gray Conger said. He was charged with murder but the charge was reduced by Recorder’s Court Judge Michael Cielinski.

Williams, who owns Williams Professional Car Care at 417 Veterans Parkway, told police he found 46-year-old Willie George Johnson of Columbus trying to steal his Cadillac from the parking lot. Williams, armed with a .22-caliber rifle, said Johnson fled and he fired warning shots in an effort to stop him. One bullet hit Johnson in the back and killed him.

Conger said his office took the case to trial because authorities didn’t feel the shooting was justified. "A person has a right to use self-defense, but this case was not a self-defense situation," Conger said.
